Visual Design

BA / MA

“Transition” explores how design ideas shift as they move through different forms of expression – text, image and object. The seminar focuses on the act of transformation itself: how describing, drawing or modeling an idea changes what the initial idea becomes. Each phase of the design is a moment of transition where meaning is redefined by the medium and the tools we use.

This process will center around the design of one singular object. The parameters of that object will be determined within the first weeks of the seminar. Through writing, sketching, 3D modeling and finally fabrication itself we will constantly reinterpret and reimagine the designated object, allowing each transition to challenge its form and concept. The goal is not simply to design an object but to understand how tools, materials and representations shape design thinking.

AI will be introduced as one of several tools that transform creative intent into visual output. By communicating with AI through text we will consider how language acts as both a design material and a site of interpretation.

First Meeting: Wednesday 15th, 10:00 (sharp), room A204B
